Virtual Studio Technology, or VST Plugins, are software interfaces that integrates software audio synthesizers and effect plugins with products such as Audio Editors and Digital Audio Workstations (DAW).

The majority of the time however, VST plugins are used within DAW products to provide additional features, effects or instruments to the recording artist or sound engineer.

Many VST products emulate physical instruments such as Piano or acoustic guitar. These plugins would take a MIDI signal for instance and use the MIDI note to correspondingly play back a pre-recorded sample of the real instrument. There are some amazing free and paid examples of this where even complex instruments such as Violin and Electric Guitar can now be represented using nothing more than a MIDI piano roll and some sampling software in the form of VST plugins.
